; d! F# }# f# z0 W BA firefighter accused in a March 6 crash that killed a Mississauga woman will fight the charges against him in court, his lawyer said today.
8 T. c" R( u* I! ]- l$ n0 R# rJarrett Johns, 35, of Toronto, accused of running a red light while driving the Mississauga fire truck that struck Kimberley Schulz's car, returns to Brampton court next Thursday to set a trial date, said his lawyer, Brian Starkman.9 g) @ E7 h( i3 J: T
"(A trial) is what it's looking like at this stage," he said. "We're attempting to obtain full disclosure that's relevant to the case and that can be a lengthy process.", i! C4 y1 O7 R
Schulz's family members and Peel Regional Police Major Collision Bureau investigators will attend next week's court hearing.
" w; f4 t* e! P. w% P/ JStarkman hasn't minced words when asked about Johns' views on the charge.$ s _# \/ h2 y1 F" X7 H
"He is definitely maintaining his innocence in this matter," Starkman said.
& d$ Z2 L0 G+ h1 C s2 _2 zSchulz, 42, who hailed from a family of firefighters, was returning home after playing hockey at York University when she was killed in the Britannia Rd. W./Rodeo Dr. crash, which occurred a few minutes before noon on a Sunday.

# q7 {- ^7 ^, y5 [. P6 l! iThe fire truck had its lights and sirens activated, as it was responding to a nearby crash, police say.4 Q8 x1 Y0 f- I1 P& y
None of the three firefighters on board were injured.% V/ h4 g) O4 \# J
Johns hasn't been suspended.
! r% y' q0 F7 s- E; R% RIn an interview last month, Mississauga Fire Chief John McDougall didn't rule out changes to policy or driver training procedures in the wake of the fatal crash.4 f4 B% ?; ]. W
Schulz, known to her husband and friends as "Blondie," was only steps away from fashion retailer Nygard, where she had worked part-time as a sales associate for about a year, when the crash occurred. She worked full-time for a Vaughan filtration company.- X& r. |' e6 _" z
Peel Cst. Doug Tracey said at the time that the traffic light sensor system, which changes lights for oncoming emergency vehicles, was activated.9 g5 d" s& N- a% y
By law, a fire truck en route to a call must come to a complete stop at a red light before proceeding.3 Y4 u) G% V7 o$ o
Police charged Johns under the Highway Traffic Act. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $1,000.
