$ u) }3 z2 l8 W qSpecial Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a car collided on Friday night near Sheridan Centre, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy.& I' l0 p! } S- C8 `- o

SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips confirmed this afternoon that the provincial watchdog, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault to determine whether officers should be charged, is involved due to the severity of the boy's injuries.- f9 h4 X: [8 i L5 o, v
The boy, who was initially taken to a local hospital and later transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, is expected to recover, said Peel Cst. Thomas Ruttan.2 G( m! ~' ?2 Q7 l
Meanwhile, police and the SIU are looking for witnesses to the Erin Mills Pkwy./Sheridan Park Dr. crash, which sent two other people, including a police officer, to hospital just after 9 p.m. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was released from hospital. ! p. X* U; Z8 C9 n4 r
The boy's mother, who was driving the other car, a Mazda, was also treated and released. ' C" Q& y+ }. i2 E$ @
Phillips said the SIU has yet to assign any subject or witnesses officers.
